Could you introduce yourself to anyone who doesn’t already know you?
Howdy ! My names Evan and I sang in the band Power.
What was your introduction to punk, hardcore?
The first shows I started going to were in Bremerton it was when I was like 13-14 . at places like the Roxy, Coffee Oasis and Rush. Which 2 out of the 3 don't exist and the other is just a church . Those early shows for me weren’t even punk bands stuff like Kane Hodder and School Yard Heroes. but it was fun and I just loved the energy and atmosphere of all these people smashed into a these tiny rooms. The first punk bands in Bremerton that I saw were YIA and Project 9 and they were so cool. Huge mohawks and studded jackets doing Misfits covers, it was badass. To me I was introduced to all punk and hardcore thru my friend Sam and Benn. They had computers and were internet savvy unlike me and downloaded everything and made mix CDs to bring over every weekend for the sleep overs and whatever was on those cds was what I fell in love with. First big hardcore show for me and some of the Bremerton boys was at the Paradox right before the Trial last show weekend and I was blown away. Owen Hart played it was the first time I had ever seen Tim Trust and he was just going wild and being the excellent front man he is and literally couldn't get enough. So we did everything we could to buy tickets and then Trial the next night was something to see. That passion of that weekend of shows was hard to not wanna be apart of it .
Anytime i think of Bremerton, i obviously think of Power. Some of the wildest sets i've seen were you guys playing Tiki House or The Charleston. Each section of the northwest seems to have their own style and vibe and Bremerton is always just wild and fun. What do you think makes shows out there so memorable?
Well thank you and yes there has been some epic tiki shows and I'm happy you got to experience a few. I think Bremerton shows have different vibe because the scene is so small and there isn’t a lot of bands or honestly a lot of other stuff to do like the bigger cities. Bremerton is just a little weirder and I think being from Bremerton other locals just wanna support and see other Bremerton bands do well, cause there hasn't ever been to many that have had longevity or had the opportunity to get more eyes on them. It's just special I dunno hard to explain why it is but it is.
What are some of your favorite memories and shows?
Some of my fav show memories man there is a lot to list . The first Rainfest was incredible because it was the most people we had ever played to and after the first one I so badly wanted to play it . Obviously the last Rainfest and being aloud to headline it was to me the pinnacle of the band. It was magical. If you could bottle that feeling you would be a millionaire. One time POWER and Owen Hart went on tour to play some shows with Dangers for a weekend, and when we got to Fresno we went thrift shopping and found all these crazy as fuck gold shirts and enough for both bands and so we all showed up wearing these wild shirts haha . Doing the Halloween set at Vera where we did Misfits covers was so fun to me . Our buddy Robert made me a coffin to crawl out of but right before the set they wanted to do the costume contest so I had to lay on there for like 15 minutes while they did the contest and I had my arms crossed like a vampire and I was like no one can see me why am I doing this hahahah. I could list memories for days hahah I love going down memory lane.
Power toured pretty often. You guys always seemed to be doing at least a two week tour or west coast run every few months. Then you guys and Wreck did that full US. How do you think you guys were perceived to other scenes? Power was a pretty unique sounding band and everyone that i know, loved it.
We always had really good reactions in the Bay Area because of our connection with Sabertooth Zombie and Twelve Gauge records who put out the records were form there. Fresno Zoo baby was our home away from home have made some lifetime friendships in that town. Canada we always had a good time. Sometimes east coast felt like we had to win them over but after a few songs we usually would. But overall we always had a good reaction. Sometimes I really miss tour. It's a sleepover with ya best friends every night hitting swim spots and overall a blast. Unless you in Bakersfield, Cali. Ya trying make me blush, ya dirty dog.
When did you start booking shows at Tiki House? What are some of your favorite memories for shows there? Also shout out to Lori, you have one of the coolest and most supportive parents that i've met. She kicks ass.
Thank you for shouting out my mom. She's a one of a kind and wild woman!! We started when we were in junior high so like 2003-2004 I believe and those are some of the best times of my life. The first time dangers played was one of the bigger shows we had and remember they covered Banned In DC cause they had all the FSU beef going and the place was rocking. The one time we got Kane Hodder to play under the alias Cocaine Slaughter we could barely squeeze everyone in there another one that sticks out for me. Then the Power “$uck It” music video shoot was another absolutely incredible evening still one of the most fun days I have ever had.
Who are some of your all time favorite NWHC bands?
Some of my all time faves ohh baby there's a few but HIV and Sunset Riders but I'm bias cause they are my best friends. But Tacoma hardcore, SES if you will. Barricade, Owen Hart, Sidetracked, really any band Brian Skiffington was in haha. Stop At Nothing was always a great time. Gag who is still going strong is impressive and Adam truly the best NWHC showman. In Stride from Vancouver was also an all time fav. Of course Ill Intent the fucking Seattle boys. I miss Wreck too.
Who are your favorite current locals or bands you think people are sleeping on? What would you like to see from the scene currently?
I honestly haven't been super involved the last couple years so new bands I honestly can't speak to. I know when I have gone to see Cujo or odd man out over the last couple years the scene honestly seems like it's good but you can always have more bands and more people bringing random friends to shows or opening your house for house shows. I have always and will always have a special place in my heart for the NWHC scene and I sure love seeing the young bucks mosh and get excited and sing along to local bands I have never heard of. It's refreshing and warms my heart.
What would you like to see from the scene currently?
I just think in this era of hardcore where a lot of it is instagram posts and trying make a buck moshing for the red carpet hardcore bands. Just take a moment to appreciate ya own scene and be present and make everyone feel welcome. This place has always been a home away from home for weirdos freaks and degenerates who don't fit in. Nobody should feel alienated because all are welcome.
Lastly, whens Power going to play a reunion? I need to dive to Bremerton Zoo again before i die haha.
Thank you for the support bud and there could be know way of knowing buddy but never say never.
